SHILLONG: The tragedy on Saturday, in which three persons were killed, has prompted the Forest Department to expedite the process of trimming and chopping weak and vulnerable trees in the city and its outskirts.
Speaking to The Shillong Times here on Monday, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest CP Marak said the department started identifying the weak trees in and around the town last week. Till now, around 80 trees have been identified for trimming and felling.
Terming the incident as tragic, Marak said Forest staff are already on the ground to cut down the trees. The official, however, refused to comment on compensation to the victims from the Forest Department.
On the other hand, Forest and Environment Minister Clement Marak said the department would create awareness among people so that they can immediately inform the department about such trees that pose a risk for commuters.
Anyone can call on 9436999102/9436999145/9436998362 to give information.
He reiterated that vulnerable trees would be removed at the earliest.
Meanwhile, the All India Radio junction in the city where the massive eucalyptus tree was uprooted on Saturday evening was finally cleared on Monday evening. Forest personnel took two days to clear the debris and open the road for traffic.
