SHILLONG: State Congress chief DD Lapang said on Saturday the party would form the government in Meghalaya in 2018 either by itself or with support.
The veteran leader was speaking on the speculations that some sitting MLAs might quit the Congress and whether it would affect the party.
He asserted that there is no dearth of capable leaders in the party to contest all the 60 seats next year and that it need not be worried about desertions at the senior level.
“I have no idea whether it (desertions) will affect the Congress but it will definitely form the Government in 2018… We are sure that any political party, be it national or regional, cannot beat Congress and we will be the largest single party,” he said.
Earlier, Lapang had reiterated that the party would distribute election forms to identify loyal leaders.
“Those who don’t want to be with us are free to decide their future,” he added.
Meanwhile, the senior leader also said the party had started its
preparations for the elections a year ago and it is alert and functional in view of the election.
When asked about BJP accusations that there is no development in Meghalaya, Lapang claimed that the people of the State will give an appropriate reply to BJP in the elections. He also asserted that it is the Congress that has brought development to the state, be it North Eastern Hill University or NEIGRIHMS.
