SHILLONG: Mynken Christian Higher Secondary School, Umroi’s dream run in the 52nd Subroto Mukherjee finally ended after they were defeated 2-1 by National Cadet Corp (NCC) of West Bengal and Sikkim in the final match played at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi on Friday.

A missed penalty during the first half cost Mynken School the match. Rupert Nongrum missed the penalty when the match was levelled at 1-1.

Earlier, Mynken struck first through an excellent goal scored by Gameliel Kharlyngdoh. However, Bhaskar Seal of the NCC soon leveled it 1-1 for his team.

The winning goal was scored by Biswanath Soren in the extra time which helped NCC lift the tournament. The team had also won the tournament in 2007.

Meanwhile, this was the third time that a school from the State had made it to the final of the Under-17 category.

In 1999, Government Boy’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong lifted the cup while St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School lifted the trophy way back in 1978.

When contacted, Mynken School football coach Jeffery Warlarpih said that the team played well throughout the match.

“We should have won if Rupert would have converted the penalty. Luck did not favour us this time but I am happy with the overall performance,” Jeffery said.

The winner ran away with a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh while runner up (Mynken) earned a cash award of Rs 1.50 lakh. The cash award was given by Vice Chief Air Marshall K.K Nohwar in the presence of former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia.
