SHILLONG: The badly damaged pavement alongside  Umiam (Barapani) dam on the arterial Guwahati-Shillong highway is grave posing danger people as well as the vehicular traffic. However, the damaged structure has been left unattended by the authorities concerned for about two months now.

The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) which looks after the Umiam dam has not yet repaired the broken pavement over the dam which connects Shillong with the rest of the country.

It was on July 5 when the broken pavement along a stretch of the National Highway 6 on the Umiam hydro-electricity dam was first witnessed by citizens and properly highlighted in the media.

However, a month and half has passed but the MeECL   till date has not repaired the pavement   though time and again, concerns have been raised about the safety of the dam.

Last time, fears were allayed   by the Board saying only the pavement along the highway on the dam was damaged after two night buses met with an accident on the spot

A visit to the dam also reveals that the dam above which thousands of vehicles ply every single day is full of potholes and the last time when repairing of the road was undertaken was in October, 2012.

Attempts were made to contact the officials of the MeECL to seek their response on the damaged pavements and the pathetic road condition over the dam but they could not be contacted.
