SHILLONG: Pyniaid Sing Syiem, who was suspended from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), has asserted that voters choose representatives who perform well.
Syiem is an MDC from Sohryngkham constituency. He was suspended from the party in January due to alleged anti-party activities.
“People in the constituency look for performance and do not necessarily go for party. HSPDP in Mawryngkneng has never crossed 1,000 votes and it has never won any MLA/MDC from Sohryngkham constituency either,” he told The Shillong Times.
“It was only after people saw our hard work that they voted for HSPDP. Party is not a concern as people vote for candidate,” he added. Syiem is optimistic that the youth will play a major role in the Assembly elections of 2018.
He said by the third or last week of September, he will announce whether he will contest from a new party or as an independent candidate from Mawryngkneng.
“I will take supporters into confidence as it will take time to decide. Whether I will contest from a party or as an independent is not known yet.”
Mawryngkneng has over 27,000 voters which might come to 28,000 after the summary revision.
