SHILLONG: The All India Congress Committee (minority department) observer for Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, Rejaul Karim Laskar called on the general secretary of the Garo Baptist Convention Rev. Janang R Sangma in Tura on Tuesday.
The meeting held at the office of the Garo Baptist Convention, described by Laskar as a courtesy call, touched upon important issues.
The AICC observer appreciated the role of the Garo Baptist Convention in strengthening peace and social harmony in Garo Hills besides praising the cordial relations between every section of the society in the region.
Pointing out that the Constitution in its Preamble describes India as a secular country, Laskar said the right to freedom of religion, including the right to “freely profess, practice, and propagate religion,” granted by the Constitution must be protected from undue encroachment.
He further emphasised that unity in diversity was India’s strength and that any attempt to impose uniformity would be contrary to India’s pluralist ethos.
Laskar also observed that North East India was a colourful mosaic of different races, cultures and faiths and that such a diversity only added to its natural beauty.
