JOWAI: In an unfortunate incident on Sunday, Leonald Lyngdoh Syngriang (23) drowned at Umngot river in Shnongpdeng village, a popular tourist destination, under Amlarem Sub-Division in West Jaintia Hills District.
Police informed that Syngriang had visited the place with his friends and had slipped and fallen into the river while attempting to cross it.
“He was carried by strong under water currents into a deep portion of the otherwise shallow river and drowned since he did not know how to swim. His friends tried to help him but failed,” police added.
Volunteers and youth from the village helped to pull out his body and the cadaver was later handed over to relatives.
The Umngot river has claimed many lives over the years including that of Rituraj Phukan, son of former Assam Minister, Pranati Phukan.
