AIZAWL: Given the budget deficit currently faced by the school education department, the government teachers on Wednesday expressed fear that their salaries for remaining months of the current fiscal would be kept pending.

According to Federation of the Mizoram Government School Teachers (FMGST), the plan budget of the department for the current fiscal was fixed at Rs 1491 lakh, which included Rs 11,319.50 lakh for salaries of grant-in-aid school teachers.

”From January to September, Rs 11,046.50 lakh have been spent for salaries, leaving a balance of Rs 272.94 lakh,” said representatives of FMGST at a press conference here on Wednesday.

They alleged that while other departments had seen 50 per cent increase in their annual plan budgets, the hike in the school education department’s budget was a mere 10.23 per cent, which has created apprehensions.

Whereas the requirement for the teachers’ salaries from October 2011 to February 2012 is Rs 6311.43 lakh, the department has only Rs 272.94 lakh left in its plan budget. (UNI)
