GUWAHATI: Government of Assam paid rich tribute to the martyrs of the 1942 Quit India Movement on the occasion of completion of 75 years of the historic struggle against British dominion in a programme held at Dhekiajuli High School playground in Sonitpur district on Wednesday.
The programme was organized by the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Assam in joint association with Sonitpur district administration and Platinum Jubilee Celebration Committee of 1942 Quit India Movement.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister’s Media Adviser Hrishikesh Goswami made a fervent call to the youth to draw inspiration from the martyrs of India’s freedom struggle and commit themselves in building a new and resurgent Assam. Goswami was representing Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who could not attend the same due to the demise of his elder brother.
Quoting Bhupen Hazarika’s famous song “Buku Hom Hom Kore” from the movie Maniram Dewan, Goswami said, “Legendary Assamese personalities like Jyotipraqsad Agarwalla, Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Bhupen Hazarika got inspired from the patriots of India’s freedom movement. Our youth must follow the ideals of the patriots and the legends and take a pledge to build a new Assam. If they fail to do so, the supreme sacrifices of the martyrs would go in vain”.
Stating that it is easier to talk about patriotism but the challenge is to reflect the same in one’s ideas and actions, Goswami referred to Martin Luthar King Jr’s quote, “Christ gave me message and Gandhi gave me method”. He further observed that those who raise their voice against the downtrodden are the best examples of humanity in the society.
Urging the gathering to deeply understand the meaning behind legendary singer Paul Robson’s “We are in the same boat brother”, the media Adviser also appealed the people of the state to uphold unity, brotherhood and harmony to thwart the evil designs of all divisive forces and contribute in the development of Assam.
Goswami also reiterated state government’s commitment to continue its fight against corruption till it is to rooted out from every nook and corner of the society.
