SHILLONG: KC-Lights, student choir of Kiddies Corner is all set to represent the country at the Asia Pacific Choir Games at Colombo, Sri Lanka on October 22.
Gabriella, a member of the choir said, “I feel privilege and honored that out of a number of schools, we got the chance to do so. I hope that when we go there, we will able to do our best.”
The students will be leaving on October 20 and will perform on October 22. “We will not be competing with the kids. We will be competing with people in the age group of 16-22 years. It is going to be quite tough,” she added.
The students will be singing three numbers- Imagine by John Lennon, Man in the mirror composed by Michael Jackson and Por Jinglong Khynnah (Childhood days) composed by Nicholas Dunn.
The headmaster of the school, Brian Wallang told reporters that it was in the month of November last year, a gentleman, Ike Sinha, who saw the children’s video on YouTube met the choir informing them of the Asia Pacific Choir Games.
After getting a call from Sinha in the month of May, he took the opportunity to send the recording of the students to Interkultur, an organisation based in Germany who organises choir games all over the world.
Other than the choir games, the kids will also perform at the Friendship concert where they will be performing a medley of Khasi-Jaintia-Garo songs, Hindi song and closing with an English song.
“For this competition, I want the world to know that though we are Indians, there is another part which is the North East. So the girls and the boys are going to wear a Khasi costume,” he said.
According to Wallang, the students are not going to get the opportunity in any textbook. “When they travel they are going to learn geography, science … and after the five days they are going to come back much richer human beings,” he added.
On the matter of sponsorship, he said, “We really want the government to support us at least with the ticket fares which happens to be very expensive.”
He said that the kids took part in every competition and managed to collect Rs 1.10 lakh.
The school has managed to nearly raise Rs 3 lakhs after former students from the state and other states pooled whereas they need Rs 10.08 lakh.
