NONGSTOIN: The new office bearers of National People’s Party, Nongstoin Block, were sworn in at a meeting attended by about 600 supporters on Tuesday.
Macmilan Byrsat was appointed president of NPP Nongstoin Block, Manoi Byrsat, vice president, Apsharai Lang Syiem and Macmilan Kharbani as general secretaries, Wallambok Dkhar and Hopefullson Kharlyngdoh as joint secretaries, Sutbor Nongsiej as treasurer besides 14 executive members.
NPP West Khasi Hills president Setsing Dkhar appointed the office bearers.
The development assumes significance as after the 2013 elections, the NPP has been silent in this area.
“I am glad that the party is functional again after a few years of silence. This has happened only after the Lyngdoh of Nongstoin Syiemship, Macmilan Byrsat decided to join the party. His presence in the party will only strengthen and inspire many people,” Dkhar said.
He said Byrsat was also one of the foremost law makers of the Syiemships in Khasi Hills and that the constituency was fortunate to have him. Dkhar also encouraged the people present in the meeting to resign from their posts in other parties if they wished to join NPP.
“I am not educated in terms of law making or governing but I have made myself very familiar to these things by drafting many laws which concerns many Syiemships. Fifty years before the late Hoping Stone Lyngdoh had said we needed to protect our traditions and customs. So it is our duty to fulfill his dream. That is why we need law makers not people who provide schemes,” Byrsat said.
He assured that if he emerged victorious in the elections, he would recognize the laws which concerned land ownership so that the court could not interfere in rights to land utilization and ownership. Besides, he would enhance the functions of the local dorbars and authority of the local villages through laws and constitutions.
“The reservation policy of 40 per cent Khasi and 40 per cent Garo is just an Assembly resolution and not a law yet, and like before, the government should set up schools in areas and villages where there were no such institutions. In terms of employment, one person from every household should be employed,” he said.
Mawshynrut PS
State home minister HDR Lyngdoh said that the inauguration of Mawshynrut civil subdivision coupled with the upgrade of the police outpost to a full-fledged police station was like a boon for the people of Mawshynrut.
“It’s a boon for the people of Mawshynrut and its adjoining areas. The Mawshynrut Police Station will cover 178 villages falling under West Khasi Hills district. The police station will help bring government functionaries closer to the people in the rural areas,” Lyngdoh said while addressing the gathering in the inaugural function at Mawshynrut police station on Tuesday.
The minister called upon the people to cooperate and work together for peace and harmony.
