Jagdish Mukhi takes oath as Governor of Assam

Guwahati: Prof Jagdish Mukhi on took oat as the new Governor of Assam on Tuesday. He was administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Just Ajit Singh in a well-attended function at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Auditorium here on Tuesday morning. The new Governor took oath in Hindi.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries including the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal and his cabinet colleagues, the state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, former chief minister and an AGP MLA, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, top officials of the state and police department.

Prof Jagdish Mukhi, who was the Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has been appointed as Governor of Assam by President Ramnath Kovind in place of Banwarilal Purohit, who has been appointed as the governor of Tamil Nadu.

Mukhi was awarded the Best Finance and Planning Minister by the then Planning Minister, Pranab Mukherjee in 1997 and best MLA by the then Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi in 2002, according to a government communique.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday received Governor designate Jagdish Mukhi at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Borjhar in the city. He was accorded a guard honour on his arrival at the airport.
