SHILLONG: For the first time in Shillong, the state government observed International Day of Older Persons at U Soso Tham Auditorium on Tuesday.
The theme for the occasion is “Stepping into the future, tapping the talents, contribution, and participation of older persons in Society.” Speaking as chief guest, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, PS Dkhar said,“As we celebrate this day, let us also remember their sacrifices to guarantee that their children have a successful life. Therefore, it is our responsibility to ensure that older persons can live a life of dignity by giving them the love, care, respect.’
He also felicitated senior most citizen D Mawrie of Malki Wahkdait and also distributed gifts to nine other senior citizens.
Z J Lyngdoh, District Social Welfare Officer, East Khasi Hills said that as per the statistics of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, there are 71 per cent senior citizens in rural areas, 29 per cent in urban areas.
She further added that population of senior citizens are increasing and there is a need for nursing homes, day care center from 10 am-5 pm.
”Over 170 senior citizens registered themselves for medical health check-up which was organised by the Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with District Medical & Health Office, East Khasi Hills, Child Development Project Office, Urban ICDS Project, Shillong and Bansara Eye Care Centre, Shillong.
