SHILLONG: The NPP has said that the people of the state are fed up with the misrule of the Congress and the confused ideology of the BJP.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NPP’s North Shillong constituency adviser Erwin K. Syiem Sutnga said that this is the time for serious consideration of the economic problems the people are facing. “In this context, the NPP will offer effective leadership”, he said. Opposing the culture of taxing the poor, Sutnga said he was prepared to take up the issue with the Centre through Tura MP and NPP national president Conrad Sangma. Sutnga also reminded that the issue of G.S.T imposed on broomgrass (phuljharu) was taken up by Sangma and GST on this item was reduced to 0%
“We will pursue the GST issue seriously with the Central Government based on the unrealistic figures of the Gross State Domestic Product”, he added.
He said the people of Meghalaya especially the lower income families are hard hit by the haste with which G.S.T has been implemented.
“Meghalaya is a backward state in terms of industrial and agricultural production. The application of the National GDP figures in a state where the current Gross State Domestic Product is either out dated or in accurate has resulted in a heavy burden of taxation on the people”, Sutnga said.
He also pointed out that the Congress ticket aspirant for the 2018 polls from North Shillong, W.H.D. Syngkon is already celebrating his victory, while the BJP ticket contender J.A Lyngdoh wants to score brownie points with the NPP over the exclusion of Meghalaya from Good Governance Day on Christmas day and Digital India Day.
