TURA: The annual celebration of World Disabled Day was organized with much fanfare by the District Social Welfare department, Tura at the New Tura playground on Saturday afternoon.
“We are not celebrating this disabled day, but we are celebrating the cause which is working towards the upliftment of the disabled person” said the Chief Guest of the function and West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal.
He said that special attention and focus is required for this special people in the society and we celebrate this important occasion which is very dear to our heart and soul.
Goyal emphasized on the need for society to open up more for these special children and lamented that not many government schools and educational institutions are comfortable taking special needs students into the regular stream.
“We want to bring these children with special needs to the main stream so that they do not get left out,” he mentioned. During the program children with special needs presented songs for the invited guests.
Later, at the end of the program, wheel chairs, walking sticks, blankets and hearing aids were distributed to the specially needed people from various blocks of the West Garo Hills district.
The Best Inclusive schools awards were also given away for the selected schools.
Those children who successfully competed in sports and other outdoor activities were also felicitated by the chief guest during the program.
Special children from various corners of Garo Hills including students of Montfort Centre of Education school and the Bethany Society took part in celebrating World Disabled Day in Tura
