TURA: A timber bridge over the Simsang river in South Garo Hills district collapsed in the heavy overnight rain.
Unseasonal heavy overnight rain led to a surge in water levels of the Simsang leading to the collapse of the bridge, made of wood and which is more than 50 meters in length, official sources said.
The bridge connects the entire Nongalbibra and Siju area in Baghmara. Local MLA, Rophul S Marak of Rongara-Siju said that he was doing his utmost to ensure quick repair of the bridge once water levels came down. “It will affect everyone who lives on both sides of the river. I have spoken to the concerned departments and they have assured that the bridge will be repaired,” said Marak. (PTI)
