SHILLONG: Former Congress leader and veteran politician from Meghalaya, Rowell Lyngdoh who has severed his ties with the Congress recently will join the National People’s Party (NPP) officially after the next State Assembly session is over.

Rowell Lyngdoh on Friday said, “We are waiting for the next Assembly session before we switch over to NPP.”

On being asked about the chances of NPP in Mawkyrwat, Lyngdoh admitted that Congress would not lose the elections easily as they had built the Congress party strongly in the constituency.

“It will be a triangular fight in Mawkyrwat between Congress, NPP and regional parties,” he said.

Admitting that there are many people in the constituency who love Congress, the former Congress leader, however, added that NPP would be a force in this year’s election and the party would emerge as the single largest one.

When asked about NPP’s close ties with BJP, he said that the party was not close with BJP but added that the NPP would have some relation with BJP in the centre if it formed the government in future.

The MLA from Mawkyrwat who is one of the senior most politicians in the state added that the party would take the call on Chief Minister post after the elections were over.

“I can say that the ministry would be shared between Khasis, Jaintias and Garos,” he said.

Rowell Lyngdoh was the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Law, Election, Water Resources, Soil and Water Conservation before but he was dropped from the State Cabinet last year.
