Garoland state movement group to hold mega rally in Tura on Nov 15

TURA: Buoyant after their August meeting in Delhi with the union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his deputy, Kiren Rijiju, followed by a memorandum submission demanding the creation of a Garoland state to be carved out of the existing five Garo Hills districts in Meghalaya, the Garo Hills State Movement Committee has announced an upcoming mega rally in Tura on the 15th of November to press for their demand.

“The central meeting with Home minister Rajnath Singh, minister of state Kiren Rijiju and Shillong MP Vincent Pala was fruitful and a copy of the memorandum was also submitted to the office of the President of India and the Prime Minister’s Office,” said Nikman Ch Marak, chairman of the GHSMC in a statement to the media.

According to the GHSMC chairman, the executive committee held a meeting in September where it was decided to hold a mega rally at the Chandmari playground in Tura on Novewmber 15th to seek the creation of a new state for Garo Hills.

“This movement for separate state is a demand under the Constitution of India to safeguard tribal societies like the Garos under Article 3 and creation of a new state under the States Re-Organization Act of 1956,” said Nikman Marak.

According to the movement leaders the mega rally would be the 21st  organised demanding a separate state.
