Rs 6000 crore scheme to upgrade ITIs in the country

SHILLONG: Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Anant Kumar Hegde has said that the Ministry is coming up with a new scheme to strengthen the Industrial Training Institutes (ITI’s) in the country.

Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, Hedge said that the new scheme with a support of Rs 6000 crore would seek the improve the quality of the ITIs in the country    in association with World Bank since the quality of some of the ITI’s in the country was not satisfactory.

It may be mentioned that the government recently de-affiliated close to 400 ITIs after quality inspections administered by it found the institutes lacking the requisite infrastructure and trainers for imparting vocational training to students.

“Till now many blocks does not have ITI’s and we want to take the institutes to every block of the country,” he said.

The Minister is in Shillong to review the programmes of the Skill development programme of the Union Government and to get feedbacks as how the programme is being implemented in the state. He will have a review meeting with the officers of the State Government on Wednesday.

Asserting that government’s work is not to give to jobs to the youth but to make them worthy of jobs, the Union Minister said that a lot of focus was being given on providing skill training to the youths of the country to make them employed.

Responding to a query, he said that militancy and unemployment were two different issues and it was not right to connect militancy with unemployment.

He said that unemployment exists in the entire world and the country whereas militancy in the world has other reasons behind it.
