Childline launched in Jaintia Hills

 JOWAI: With a view to reach out to every child in need and ensure his right and protection, a Childline was officially launched in Jaintia Hills at a meeting held at Science Hall, Circuit House, Jowai on Tuesday.

The programme was attended by Assembly Deputy Speaker, Shanbor Shullai as the chief guest and Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, T Dkhar as the guest of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Shullai congratulated the members of the Jaintia Hills Development Society who had initiated launching of Childline in Jowai.

“Childline in Shillong has played a vital role in the society in the outreach service for children in need of care and protection and I am happy that in Jaintia Hills the people have come forward to initiate this noble cause”, Shullai said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner who also spoke on the occasion informed that the district administration is giving full support to the Jaintia Hills Development Society. “He called upon all members of the society to sincerely work for the welfare of the people.

The Additional Superintendent of Police, Lakador Syiem informed that the police department is facing lots of problems dealing with children.

“The law has clearly stated that they (Police) cannot detain a child but they need to be sent to shelter homes which we don’t have in Jaintia Hills district”, Syiem said.

Childline is a project supported and funded by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.
