Shillong: As a part of the observance of Vigilance Awareness Week (Oct 30-Nov 4), Padmashri Patricia Mukhim, the editor of Shillong Times gave an illuminating talk at IIM Shillong on ‘’Corruption Free India: Role of Management Students.”
The talk elicited several questions and responses and focussed on the ills of corruption and the way forward. Emphasising on the role of studets, she said,
“Voice is an agency in a democracy. Without voice, we are not full citizens of the country, and many people in our country are not a part of that voice. We can’t expect government alone to tackle corruption. We need strong civil institutions and whistleblowers to address corruption.”
She also talked about the roles and responsibility of the media in bringing forward the truth and the pressures associated with it.
Focussing on the North-East, Mukhim made the students cognizant of the ongoing events in the state of Meghalaya and talked about the dire need for reforms and action, especially in the healthcare sector.
Talking about the importance of the masses, she said, “We need to analyze contracts because huge monetary costs are involved in that. An informed electorate is important in identifying and resolving such issues.”
The students of IIM Shillong, in the presence of Dr. Amitabha De, Director, IIM Shillong and Professor P. Sarvanan, Chief Vigilance officer, IIM Shillong, pledged to fight corruption and to go beyond the legal compliances and follow ethical practices to see the vision of corruption free India come true.
