GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday reviewed the garbage clearance in the state’s main city Guwahati at a high level meeting with senior officials of Ramky, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and Guwahati Development Department (GDD) here.

Mr Gogoi directed Ramky to leave no stone unturned to keep the city clean by strictly supervising the collection of garbage by NGOs from households and commercial establishments.

He asked Ramky to provide necessary dustbins, machineries and equipment for disposal of garbage to make the city clean. The Chief Minister also asked Ramky to upgrade its technology to make it environment-friendly and to prevent damage to roads and pavements during the process of garbage clearance through machineries.

The Chief Minister told the senior officials of Ramky categorically that while the Government would ensure steady flow of funds, the company would have to keep the city clean at any cost. Mr Gogoi also asked Ramky and GMC to work in tandem and to ensure smooth coordination with different stakeholders to make the garbage clearing process a hassle-free one.

The Chairman of Ramky, A A Rami Reddy, assured the Chief Minister that it would provide the necessary waste bins and equipment for garbage clearance to make the city clean and that the company would invest Rs 68 crore in the next 10 years for procurement of equipment.

The Integrated Solid Waste Management Project in Guwahati was commissioned by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in November 2008.

The project is being implemented by Guwahati Waste Management Company Limited (GWMCL), a joint venture of the Assam government and Hyderabad-headquartered Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited.

This was the first project, being implemented by the government through private-public partnership (PPP) mode. Under the terms of agreement, the GWMCL will take care of collection, transportation and treatment of municipal solid waste for a 20-year period. (UNI)
