SHILLONG: The Labour Commissioner has instructed the Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited (MeECL) management to familiarise themselves with the Supreme Court order of October 26, 2016, on equal pay for equal work to know the modalities of its implementation.
A statement issued here said Labour Commissioner B. Mawlong convened a meeting with MeECL and union representatives.
The MeECL Progressive Workers’ Union (MPWU) has demanded immediate implementation of equal pay for equal work while they await fulfilment of their demand for regularisation.
MPWU representatives were Mantiphrang Lyngdoh (president), Anjelina Hynniewta (general secretary), Angela Rangad (executive committee member) and Jethaniel Marak (vice president).
In a statement released here, it stated that there was preliminary discussion on the charter of demands submitted by the union.
It stated that the MeECL management said the flawed contract agreement as demanded by the union has been withdrawn. But the union insisted that an official written notification in this regard is essential to avoid arbitrariness.
The union said the demands should be met within a time frame.
The MeECL management has informed that the payment of latest minimum wage rate will start soon and the arrears due to the workers shall also be released. It has also promised that all statutory benefits like PF, ESI, leave and overtime will feature in new work agreements.
