Assamese students’ body condoles Phukan’s death

SHILLONG: The Shillong Socio-Cultural Assamese Student Association (SSASA) has condoled the demise of renowned Assamese film actor Biju Phukan.
The actor passed away in Guwahati on Wednesday. He was 70. SSASA said Phukan’s death is a big loss for not only Assam but for the entire film fraternity.
Phukan was the doyen of Assamese Film Society. He made his debut in 1970 in the film ‘Buwari’. He was born in Dibrugarh in 1947 and accomplished education from Kanoi College, Dibrugarh.
Phukan, who acted in more than 80 movies, both Assamese and Bengali, was known as the evergreen actor of Assam for his natural and bold acting. In 1971, this stalwart was conferred the prestigious ‘Rajat Kamal Award’ (the best regional film of the year) for the film ‘Aranya’, which brought a message for the protection of rhinoceroses and preservation of wildlife.
He also received the life time achievement award for boundless contribution to Assamese film industry.
