SHILLONG: Allegations against sitting HSPDP’s Member District Council (MDC), Teilinia Thangkhiew, of wooing Nepalese surfaced after Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), West Khasi Hills District Unit, condemned her move of assuring them enrollment for voters’ ID cards in a bid to garner votes from them.

General secretary, Rishot Kharbani, in a statement stated, “The organisation has looked up to her as someone who will protect the state against the illegal immigrants but then she is trying to gain their (illegal immigrants’) confidence and make them residents of the state.”

In an alleged case of vote bank politics, the KSU went on to state that they were making efforts to fight against illegal immigrants and criticised Thangkhiew for embracing the immigrants for her personal benefit without looking at the dangers of illegal immigration.

Lashing out at Thangkhiew, the union stated that her ploy to assure voter cards had hurt the sentiments of the people in West Khasi Hills especially people in Langpih.

“The Nepalese in Langpih are a stumbling block to the indigenous people there, whereas in Shillong, the representatives are trying to woo the immigrants for vote by assuring them of voter card ID cards,” the union stated.

They went on to add, “It all goes to show that representatives do not hesitate to divide the Khasi community for their self-interest.”
