KSU presses for sub-division at Mawryngkneng

SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Mawryngkneng, has demanded he state government to set up a Civil Sub-Division at Mawryngkneng before the commencement of the Winters Session of the Assembly and threatened to resort to agitation to press for fulfilment of their demand.

In a statement issued here, general secretary of the Mawryngkneng circle, Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew said that the state government had till date not responded to the demand to upgrade the Mawryngkneng C&RD Block to Civil Sub division.

He added that the total number of villages under the present C & RD Block was 64 villages and the population as per the 2011 census was 67,291 (33,396 are males and 33,895 are females).

The union stated that a memorandum was submitted on October 31 to the state government including a copies to the local MLA of Mawryngkneng, David Nongrum, Mawkynrew MLA Remington Pyngrope and MLA from Nongkrem, Ardent M Basaiawmoit but the three legislators were unresponsive.

In view of the lackadaisical attitude of the state government, Kharbihkhiew stated that the union and the people of the constituencies would stage a peaceful protest in all the three constituencies of Mawryngkneng, Mawkynrew and Nongkrem.
