SHILLONG: The city traffic police were contemplating introducing e-challans to violators in the city when the state government decided to float an expression of interest (EoI) for procuring point of sale machines.
East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said a number of meetings were held for introducing the e-challan, however in the last meeting, it was decided to float a tender for procuring point of sale (POS) machines since the Transport Department is also involved in imposing fines through their enforcing wing. Marak said there are seven traffic branches in the city and each will requires around 10 POS machines. It may be mentioned that the National Informatics Centre will prepare android software for initiatives like other metropolitan cities. “I can assure you that we are going in the right direction and we will definitely roll out the system by next year,” Marak said.
The SP further added that as the traffic police would go digital, the allegations over charging and corruption can be eliminated, there will be more transparency as people will know they are being charged under which section and how much.
