SHILLONG: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has threatened to protest if the government failed to set up a civil sub-division in Mawryngkneng before the commencement of the winter session of the Assembly.
In a statement issued here, general secretary of the Mawryngkneng circle Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew said the state government has till date not responded to the demand to upgrade the Mawryngkneng C&RD block to civil sub division.
He added that the total number of villages under the present C&RD block is 64 and the population as per the 2011 census is 67,291 (33,396 are males and 33,895 are females).
The union stated that a memorandum was submitted on October 31 to Mawryngkneng MLA David Nongrum, Mawkynrew MLA Remington Pyngrope and Nongkrem MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit but there was no response.
Kharbihkhiew said the government’s lackadaisical attitude has prompted the union and the people to stage a peaceful protest in the three constituencies of Mawryngkneng, Mawkynrew and Nongkrem.
The students’ body said that they will be awaiting for a respond to the earliest.
