Agri fair stresses on doubling farmers’ income

SHILLONG: Solutions to sustain income security from the traditional forms of agriculture and ways to double farmers’ income were the focal points of discussion at the Regional Agriculture Fair that concluded on Tuesday.
The four-day event witnessed various events including brainstorming sessions on doubling farmers’ income and successful implementation of schemes for the farmers. Traditional food and cuisine were also exhibited during the fair.
The 43rd ICAR institute foundation was also commemorated along with the concluding function of the fair. The staff members of the institute were felicitated for their commendable contribution towards the institute.
The interaction between farmers and scientists was another key feature of the event which created an opportunity for the various stakeholders at regional level to exchange ideas, knowledge and experiences for effective transfer of technology.
Addressing the gathering, Narendra Prakash, director of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, highlighted the achievements of the institute in the past decade and remembered the contributions of his predecessors.
Over the decades, the institute contributed immensely towards the food security mission of the country and specifically towards the region.
C. Rajkhowa, the former director, ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, while speaking as the chief guest, said the institute was working towards the development of the farming community and emphasising on technology-based agriculture through combining technology with the traditional farming practices. “It is a major step taken towards the conservation of natural resources,” he said.
