SHILLONG: An RTI sought from the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) by the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), state youth wing has revealed that illegal hawkers do not possess labour licence/work permit.

The SMB has already registered the hawkers who are doing their business in and around Shillong and it has also given them permission since March 31, 2017.

The youth wing of the regional party sought information through an RTI application from the SMB to get wind of the number of illegal hawkers in Shillong. It has demanded that the SMB should remove the names of those illegal hawkers who do not possess the license/work permit.

In a statement issued here, the president of KHNAM, youth wing, Thomas Passah expressed surprise at the move of SMB to register the hawkers without ascertaining any documents from them as per the procedures of law.

Passah criticised the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for taking the matter lightly by not deploying its Enforcement Wing to check documents from hawkers.

According to Passah, the KHADC should do its part of inspection from time to time.

Condemning the concerned authorities for ignoring the matter of illegal hawkers, the KHNAM youth wing shot off a letter of the KHADC, Under Secretary of Urban Affairs department of the State government.
