SHILLONG: This is an era of social media and apart from youths, even political parties are becoming tech savvy and many of them including politicians would use social media to spread their word to the voters ahead of the elections.
However, the political parties and politicians would have to be careful while using social media such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp and they would have to ensure that nothing divisive is shared and updated in their respective pages.
Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer, Frederick Kharkongor on Thursday said that the state Election Department recently held a video conference with the Election Commission of India to discuss the matter of using social media by political parties.
“If there is any such activity like divisive updates, it has to be brought to the notice of the authorities in the form of a complaint and based on it, the model code of conduct team in every district will take cognizance of it,” he said.
He also pointed out that it is difficult to scroll all the updates of the political parties and the candidates in the media. The statement of the CEO assumes significance as most of the political parties who will be contesting the elections including Congress, BJP, UDP, KHNAM, NPP and HSPDP have their pages in Facebook besides many politicians now are also sharing their word across to the people through the medium of social media.
Meanwhile, he also said the page of the Chief Electoral Officer will be updated frequently and even the pages of various districts will now be made active to the public.
