Mawkyrwat: The office of the Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hils District has withdrawn all the letters sent to the headmen and land owners for acquisition of land for setting up of the BSF Battalion Headquarters in Mawkyrwat.
General Secretary of the KSU South West Khasi Hills unit, Jiedskhem Nongsiej informed that the decision to withdraw all the letters sent by the DC office for acquiring land for setting up of the BSF camp was informed by the DC, I. Laloo during the meeting with the KSU leaders on Thursday. It may be mentioned that the KSU South West Khasi Hills has called for a protest march on January 24 next to the office of the Deputy Commissioner against the inaction of the district administration to withdraw letters even after the one-week deadline was ended.
“The DC told us that she has already informed the higher authorities that no land was available for setting up of the BSF Battalion Headquarter at the District and the proposal of acquiring land has already been stopped,” Nongsiej said, adding that the DC has also assured the KSU that this kind of issues will be first discussed with the traditional heads and NGOs before moving ahead.
Therefore, with the assurance of the DC, the KSU has decided to suspend the protest on January 24 next but it will continue to follow-up on the issue especially because the Union suspected that it has hidden agenda, that is, to mine uranium from South West Khasi Hills District.
