Police rescue abducted coal trader in Garo Hills

 SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police on Tuesday rescued one Biren Marak, a coal trader, from the clutches of suspected GNLA cadres at Gambigre forest.

Marak was kidnapped from Damalgre village last week.

In the rescue operation, Rahul R Marak, area commander of the outfit and two other cadres received bullet injuries, police sources said. The villagers assisted the police team in tracking down the injured GNLA cadres, sources added.

Meanwhile, in an act of desperation, GNLA’s self-styled Commander-in-Chief Sohan D Shira ordered his cadres to fire at a police truck and a Maruti Gypsy carrying firewood for the 5th Meghalaya Police battalion near Rongrengre Reserve Forest on Tuesday at around 4 pm.

Four police personnel were injured in the incident.

Havildar (driver) Tearson Momin was hit on the hips and while constable Luckystar Lyngdoh got hit on the arm and shoulder. Others injured cops were Dipankar Roy and Amin Gurung.Police sources say the Gypsy was partially damaged. Both the injured were admitted to Tura Civil Hospital.
