Shillong: Assam police is all set to have a new Director General of Police (DGP), but three senior senior IPS officers who are serving in Meghalaya police, have failed to find place in the list of probables.

Meghalaya and Assam share a joint cadre post for all Central civil services posts.

None of the three senior serving IPS officers in Meghalaya had been considered by the Assam Government in the empanelled list for appointment of a new DGP in Assam.

The tenure of present Assam DGP Sankar Barua will expire on December 31.

Three senior IPS officers serving in Meghalaya – Kulbir Krishan (Director General of Prisons), Prem Singh (Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards) and B Kezo (acting DGP), were not included in the list.

In fact, Krishan, a 1976 batch cadre, is the senior most IPS officer in Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

Meanwhile, a police official said he was amazed with the Assam Government for not including the three seniormost police officers from Meghalaya in the list though both states shared the same cadre.

”If the Meghalaya Government empanelled officers from Assam and even those on deputation then why IPS officers from Meghalaya are left out,” the police officer said on condition of anonymity.

The State Security Committee of Assam is scheduled to meet on December 23 for selecting the new DGP.

A five-member panel, comprising Subhas Goswami (CMD, Housing), J N Chowdhury (Additional Director, IB), D K Pathak (Additional Director General, CRPF), Rajendra Kumar (DG, Housing and Civil Defence) and R C Tayel (Additional Director General, CRPF) has been formed by Assam’s Home Department in this regard.

In fact, Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) Chief Hoping Stone Lyngdoh had always been demanding for a separate cadre for Meghalaya as according to him, Assam was taking advantage of Meghalaya due to the present joint cadre system. (UNI)
