SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has directed the various localities in the city to prepare a Disaster Management Plan (DMP).
DMA Chief Executive Officer DM Wahlang informed that a total number of 38 localities in the city have been directed to prepare the DMP, following a meeting with the Rangbah Shnong of the different localities.
Replying to a query, he said that the Government would allocate an amount of Rs 6000 to the localities for preparing the DMP, out of which an amount of Rs 3000 has already been released.
“We would release the remaining amount once the DMP preparation is completed,” Wahlang said.
One of the components of the DMP is the physical and resource mapping of the village, he said while adding that the inventory list would be the other component of the plan.
Explaining about the inventory list, Wahlang said that it would have detailed information about the tools available in the locality like saw, axe and others such equipments which would be helpful in rescue during any disaster. The inventory list would also contain the details of the people residing in the locality especially contractors who would be able to assist in the event of any disaster.
“Contractors are very important since they would have the requisite materials necessary in rescue and relief work in the event of a disaster,” he said.
He said that the locality is also supposed to have a team of volunteers in place to shoulder responsibilities like first aid and rescue of people from inside the buildings.
“These volunteers would be provided with training on disaster management,” he added.
