TURA: A large number of Corrugated galvanized iron (CGI) sheets reportedly meant for distribution to voters by politicians has been seized in Phulbari constituency on Wednesday night.

Three truckloads of the CGI sheets had been stored in two schools at Demdema village of Phulbari when Election officials were informed about the stockpile.

The National People’s Party (NPP) had accused the Congress candidate and Meghalaya Speaker Abu Taheer Mondol of violating the model code of conduct by stocking the CGI for alleged distribution to voters ahead of the February 27th elections.

Election surveillance teams and flying squads who were dispatched to the site found the material stored at two places, including Demdema LP school. The school and the material were immediately sealed by the election officials to prevent it from being taken away.

“We have sealed the school and a magisterial enquiry has been ordered to find out as to whom the consignment belongs to. The investigation is being taken up by the Demdema block officer (BDO) and we are going to seize all the material,” informed district election officer and deputy commissioner Ram Singh.
