Itanagar: Anti-dam activists of Assam who have launched an indefinite economic blockade in Lakhimpur against NHPC dam at Gerukamukh, has given an assurance to a students delegation for exempting trucks carrying essential commodities and fuel to three Siang districts of Arunachal Pradesh from the purview of the blockade.

A delegation of students from East, West and Upper Siang districts yesterday convened a meeting with the activists requesting them to allow movement of truck carrying essential commodities to the districts which have been badly affected due to the indefinite blockade, which entered its eighth day today.

The anti-dam activists led by All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) have launched the blockade in Assam against the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project protesting construction of the big dam which they claimed would badly affect the people living in the downstream of the river.

“The trucks carrying essential items and fuel tankers meant for East Siang, West Siang and Upper Siang districts will be allowed to move from today,” KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi said.

Gogoi gave this assurance to the students delegation while responding to the request made by the latter for lifting the blockade at Lakhimpur last evening, said All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) spokesperson Tobom Dai, who led the students delegation to meet the activists. (PTI)
