Poll dates for 5 states announced

New Delhi: Less than a year after four states and a Union territory went to polls in April-May this year, politcal parties in India face another big test in elections to five state legislative assemblies early next year with the Election Commission on Saturday annoucing their poll schedule, including for the country’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh with 111.9 million electors.

Elections kick off on January 28 in Manipur, followed by Punjab and Uttarakhand on January on 30, Uttar Pradesh from February 4 to 28 and Goa on March 3.

Barring Uttar Pradesh, voting in the remaining four states would be a one-day affair.

Polling in Uttar Pradesh will be spread for seven in February on 4, 8, 11, 15, 19, 23 and 28.

Counting of votes for all the five states will be held on March 4 and results are expected the same day.

The last big test in four states in April-May this year saw change of regimes in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and union territory of Puducherry, while Congress retained power in Assam.

More than 137 million peoplewill be eligible to vote in these five states. (UNI)
