JOWAI: A section of the voters in East Jaintia Hills believes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not the force to reckon with this election season despite its clarion call for change from the incumbent Congress government.
In Khliehriat constituency, BJP’s Justine Dkhar, who is the local MLA, might not be re-elected this time, said many voters, including the saffron party’s supporters.
“The BJP candidate is trying to use money power but people here are educated enough this time,” said a government school teacher and added, “The seizure of Rs 17 lakh from BJP supporters at Byndihati clearly indicates that BJP is trying to use money power.”
Considering the current situation, the UDP seems to be on a firmer platform. The party’s candidate, Kyrmen Shylla who is the son of former MDC Kor Sympli, has got support from three former MLAs, Nehlang Lyngdoh, Simon Siangshai and Obil Kyndait, besides Tuber MDC Lasky Rymbai and Sohkymphor MDC Skhembok Suchiang.
Dkhar is facing a tough contest despite gaining support of prominent coal businessmen in the region, besides two MDCs.
In Sutnga-Saipung, the second constituency in the district, there will be a close fight between MLA Hopeful Bamon of NPP and former MLA Shitlang Pale of the Congress.
Former JHADC Chief Hambertus Nongtdu is contesting from BJP but voters in the constituency are against welcoming the saffron party.
According to political observers here NPP stands a chance to win in the upcoming election.
