SHILLONG: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary SP Thapa said that the state party has received strict instruction from the Central leadership not to allow the assassination of Jonathone Sangma and two others die down in the clamour of the Assembly polls.
He told reporters during a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, “After the election is over, we will find out the truth as to who is behind the killing and we are going to find out more about the assassination.” He declared that the party will not rest till the main culprit is found.”
The general secretary said that if required, the party will raise the matter in Parliament if the state government fails to take action, adding that they have also demanded an NIA probe.
He added that the “grave will be dug” on the alleged politicians-militants nexus.
Commenting on the volatile situation in certain pockets of Garo Hills, Thapa urged the militants not to resort to heinous crimes but to resolve the matter across the table. “They have got a fight, we understand. Let us place the matter on the table and sort it out. If you pick up the gun then the matter would get more complicated,” he said. Remembering the sacrifices of the late Jonathone for Williamnagar and the state as a whole, he said that the party will field another candidate in the constituency.
“Definitely, we are going to make a proposal to the wife of the late Jonathone but it is up to them whether they will accept our request and invitation to join and work for the betterment for the state,” Thapa said.

NCP urges Centre
for NIA probe
Central leadership of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has asked the Central Government to institute NIA inquiry into the death of its candidate from Williamngar, Johnathone Sangma, who was recently killed at Samanda.
The Permanent Secretary of NCP, SR Kohli, in a letter to the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh said that apart from the death of Sangma, the house of another candidate of the NCP from Rongjeng was burnt by miscreants under the influence of some political parties. The party leadership has also asked the Union Home Minister to provide sufficient security to all the NCP candidates.
