SHILLONG: Home Minister James Sangma said police are making efforts to find the killers of JYF leader Poipynhun Majaw.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly on Friday, Sangma said investigation was on to find out those who were involved in the crime.
Sangma said after an FIR was filed, police registered a case at Khliehriat police station.
The home minister, however, said police are yet to receive the postmortem report. The body of Majaw was found at Khliehriat on March 19 and police recovered a wrench, two Rs 500 notes, a pair of spectacles and a motor bike from the place. Meanwhile, the central executive council of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) condemned the murder of Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF) president Poipynbun Majaw.
In a statement issued here, the general secretary of KSU, Donald Thabah expressed grief at the demise of Majaw, who Thabah said stood for the rights of the tribals. The union urged the authorities to take the matter seriously and to nab the culprits at the earliest.
The union conveyed its condolence to the bereaved family members and said that it is ready to extend help to the JYF.
On the other hand, NGOs from Garo Hills including GSU, ADE, AYWO and FKJGP (Garo Hills Zone) have condoled the death of Poipynhun Majaw while demanding that the culprits must be brought to book.
In a statement released on Friday, the NGOs recalled Majaw, as their dear friend and respected colleague, who fought with them for the implementation of ILP.
The statement said “The cowardly perpetrators who may probably have a hand in the misappropriation of public money in the JHADC could possibly be the murderers,” adding that the Government must initiate a high level enquiry to uncover the murderers.
