Palm Sunday ushers in Holy Week

SHILLONG/ TURA: Palm Sunday was observed by Christians across the state.
Palm Sunday, the last week of Lent, also marks the beginning of Holy Week, the most important event in the Christian calendar on which falls Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Christians across churches in Khasi Hills and Garo Hills attended service on Sunday morning carrying with them Palm leaves to recall the religious event which took place hundreds of years ago.
In Shillong, the faithful observed the solemn occasion by attending church services carrying palms in processions and singing religious hymns before partaking in church service.
In Tura, a procession was taken out by several thousand Catholic faithful at the Sacred Heart Shrine. The significance of Palm Sunday was narrated by priests at different churches.
Thousands of faithful made it to Sunday mass to offer prayers on the special occasion.
At the Tura Baptist Church, the oldest church in the town, special sermon was given about the significance of Palm Sunday in the lives of Christians.
According to the Holy Bible, Lord Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem in the most humble manner riding on a donkey even as thousands of his faithful and followers cheered him displaying their love for him by placing their coats on the road that Christ rode on. They waved Palm leaves and shouted ‘Hosanaah’.
