SHILLONG: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed that four District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) in Nongpoh, Nongstoin, Tura and Baghmara are functioning without principals.
However, the minister has said the procedure to hire principals has begun.
Congress MLA George Lyngdoh alleged that infrastructure at DIET centres is not proper and that “steps should be taken to ensure that DIET centers are improved and up-scaled to absorb more teachers.”
In reply, Rymbui said fund is a problem but “the department will make sure that proper infrastructure is developed step by step”.
Replying to a question by Congress MLA Winnerson D. Sangma, Rymbui informed that Rs 4,46,50,000 is spent on paying stipend to candidates selected for teachers’ training under DIET.
Raising a supplementary query, Sangma asked on the enrolment capacity in each DIET to which the minister said the capacity is 100 in each of the DIETs in Thadlaskein (West Jaintia Hills), Sohra (East Khasi Hills), Resubelpara (North Garo Hills), while the enrolment is 50 in each of the centres in Nongpoh (Ri Bhoi), Nongstoin (West Khasi Hills), Tura (West Garo Hills) and Baghmara (South Garo Hills).
