SHILLONG: Law Minister James Sangma on Friday said the government has filed a petition requesting extension of the deadline for complete separation of the Judiciary from the Executive.
Sangma was replying to a supplementary question by HSPDP MLA Renikton Tongkhar who wanted to know the target date for completion of the separation process. Sangma added that the separation process will be done as quickly as possible and before 2020.
Earlier, Tongkhar wanted to know whether the foundation stone for the District Court building at Mawkyrwat will be laid. To this, Sangma said that the concerned deputy commissioner has been asked to assess the rent of the building which will temporarily house the Court.
To a supplementary question, Sangma said the government is not ready for laying the foundation stone.
When Tongkhar sought to know details on appointment of the judicial staff, Sangma said the staff will be appointed as and when the Judiciary is separated from the Executive.
