MAWKYRWAT: South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo has urged all stakeholders to work together on social and environmental issues like crime against women and children, illegal burning of forest, indiscriminate fishing practices, and misconceptions about Aadhaar and other government schemes.
Speaking at the awareness cum sensitisation programme on Tuesday, the DC said, “There are many cases registered and several inquiries have been conducted into different issues but there is no end to crime and illegal practices that destroy environment. We know that unless we get your cooperation, our initiatives will not be successful.”
On people’s superstitious beliefs about Aadhaar, Laloo said it has affected many people where some have stopped their children from going to school and some did not immunise their children and rejected all government schemes. “The District Task Force that deals with immunisation and pulse polio has detected many such cases,” she added.
The DC also expressed concern over the illegal practice of burning land and forest and also about the destructive fishing practices. “We have seen media reports about the death of fishes in Ranikor in which the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and the office of the Superintendent of Fisheries, Mawkyrwat have conducted separate inquiries,” Laloo said.
Laloo said if the cause of the death of fishes is due to the use of chemicals and other types of destructive practices then the need of awareness and sensitisation is a must.
