TURA: The National People’s Party has accused the Congress of violating the model code of conduct in Williamnagar on the eve of elections to the constituency.

The allegation is over the presence of former minister and senior Congress leader Zenith M Sangma, MLA Winnerson D Sangma and GHADC MDC Ismail Marak stationing themselves in Williamnagar after campaigning came to an end at 4 PM Wednesday.

“The model code clearly states that anyone who is not a voter of the constituency cannot reside, particularly politicians. What was the need for the Congress leaders to remain in the town when even the chief minister and other leaders had exited the place as soon as campaigning was over,” alleged Home minister James Pangsang K Sangma.

The NPP had alerted the election observers about the presence of the three leaders in a house in the town the same evening.

“We were informed about the issue and we sent our election squads to the place. They found them in a house. They said they were going to leave after having dinner,” informed the general observer B C Burman to The Shillong Times.

The three Congress leaders and their convoy were escorted out of the constituency the same night by election teams.

“What was the need for the Congress leaders to stay back for food when they were heading home. It was a ploy by the Congress to try and gain some votes,” alleged the home minister.
