GUWAHATI: The New Director General of Assam Police, Kuladhar Saikia on Monday said he would like to establish a research wing in the state police force to study the emerging trend of crime in the State.
“Over the years, the pattern of crime has changed in Assam or even in the entire country. For example, when it comes to crime against property, there are more cases of theft now than dacoity. I have been thinking about the idea of setting up a research wing in Assam Police. We haven’t taken any decision yet…but we will take a call on it soon,” said Saikia, who took over from Mukesh Sahay on his superannuation today.
The new DGP said tackling crime against women which has shown a rising trend of late in the state would be high on his agenda while outlining his priorities.
“We will have to put emphasis on more social intervention. Gender sensitization programmes will be conducted across the State. Students will also be involved,” he said.
The new DGP also mentioned that special focus would be given on bringing down the number of road mishaps and the accident fatalities.
“Accidents on highways have been increasing. We will have to see how we can bring it down. We will have to look into many aspects like road engineering, proper lighting, policing and issues involving the transport department,” he said.
He also admitted that the conviction rate needs to be improved, for which some special training would be given to investigating officers. “Human trafficking and drug abuse are two other areas that require real focus,” he said.
Saikia underscored the need for improvement of working condition of police personnel so as to boost their morale. “While we are taking care of the infrastructure needs by launching the project Mission for Overall Improvement of Thana for Responsive Image (Moitri), we also have to ensure that the personnel get their day to day requirements. We have asked the SPs to regularly interact with the personnel at the reserves so that they can understand the lacunae, if any,” he said.
