KHADC banks on documents to solve border dispute

SHILLONG: The chief executive member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), PN Syiem, said on Friday proper documents are needed to prove land ownership of people in border areas under the district council.
Speaking to reporters on the boundary dispute with Assam, Syiem said, “With proper documents we will clearly tell Assam that based on the document collected and the materials and maps that we have, Assam should respect the documents that we have and if it does not do so, the EC (executive committee) will discuss the next step.”
The CEM said clear documents are needed for land in Block II and Nongmynsaw areas.
On the boundary dispute with Assam on the scheduled areas, the KHADC will revive the Boundary Dispute Committee and allot three months’ time to submit a report to the executive body of the council.
Based on the EC report, it will proceed on the way and means to solve the boundary dispute with the neighbouring state.
The Boundary Dispute Committee will call on the chiefs, sordars and other traditional institutions and to collect materials which reflect the ownership of land in border areas.
Mining and Land Tenure System Committee
The EC will constitute the Mining and Land Tenure System Committee to clear doubts on the complex issue of land and mining.
The committee will be headed by BJP MDC Neil Antonio War as chairman and John Dkhar, deputy secretary as member secretary, Executive Member in charge of land, Hadrian Lyngdoh, Erwin Sutnga as member. “The Mining and Land Tenure System Committee to submit their report within three months to the EC so that the committee will know how to proceed ahead,” he said. The Committee can also invite members to study matter well.
