Meghalaya Cabinet’s nod to set up food processing directorate

SHILLONG: The State Cabinet has approved the proposal for  setting up of Directorate of Food Processing in the state under the Agriculture Department.

Informing this after the Cabinet meeting, Cabinet Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that the State till date did not have the Directorate of Food Processing though oranges, pineapple, potatoes, tomatoes grown in Meghalaya are very rich.

“The decision was after taken into consideration various agricultural products including fruits go waste in the absence of proper infrastructure,” he said.

According to Tynsong, the Directorate will look after the food processing units and the government would also encourage private parties and entrepreneurs to set up food processing units in the state

Tynsong said that the financial implication in the creation of the Directorate is minimal and the government would try to deploy officers from different departments who have knowledge in the food processing in the directorate.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has also approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Health Service Rules, 1990 which is related to the promotion of doctors.
