SHILLONG: Husband-wife duo from the banned militant outfit, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), surrendered before Meghalaya Home Minister, James K Sangma in the presence of DGP, S B Singh at Police Headquarters on Sunday.
The cadres are : Aiborlang Thongni, alias Bahbah Mawpud (36) of Mawpud Village in South West Khasi Hills and his wife, Rishalin Syiemlieh (27) alias Lin of Photjaud village in South West Khasi Hills.
Thongni, a senior most cadre in Bangladesh, joined the HNLC in the year 2001 and was trained at Chittagong, Bangladesh and had been staying in Bilwa, Bangladesh.
On the other hand, Syiemlieh who was closely associated with senior cadres of HNLC joined the outfit when she was 14 years of age. In Bangladesh, she had undergone arms training in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The two militants got married in 2013 and have two children.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma termed their surrender as “a step taken in correct direction and one involving courage and determination.”
Reiterating that there will be no negotiations with any group or organization, he maintained that the government is committed to rehabilitate militants who would give up activities with banned organizations.
